A Cold Dream, A Warm Victory
In June 2025, India’s women’s ice hockey team achieved a groundbreaking milestone, winning bronze at the IIHF Women’s Asia Cup in Al-Ain, UAE. This victory marks India’s first-ever international medal in ice hockey, a sport still developing in the country’s sporting ecosystem.
From Ladakh’s Frozen Ponds to International Glory
Humble Beginnings in the Himalayas
Most of the team hails from Ladakh and Himachal Pradesh, where ice hockey is played on frozen lakes with makeshift gear. Despite the harsh terrain and lack of professional rinks, these young women pursued the sport with relentless dedication.
Fighting Against the Odds
- Limited Infrastructure: No Olympic-grade rinks, minimal funding, and shared practice hours with men’s teams.
Financial Struggles: Gear was second-hand. Travel funds were often crowd-sourced. - Cultural Resistance: Many players were told, “Girls don’t play ice hockey.” But they chose to skate against the tide.

Support from Grassroots Organizations
Organizations like the Ladakh Women’s Ice Hockey Foundation (LWIHF) and Indo-Tibetan Border Police (ITBP) played a crucial role—providing coaching, gear, and motivation.
The Journey to the 2025 IIHF Women’s Asia Cup
International Debut in 2016
India’s women’s team first appeared on the global stage in 2016. Although the early results were tough, the experience laid the foundation for future growth. Goalkeeper Noor Jahan was even recognized as the Best Goaltender in their debut tournament.
Years of Relentless Training
Over the next nine years, the team grew stronger—technically and emotionally. Training became more structured. The bond between players, many of whom trained late into freezing Ladakhi nights, became unbreakable.
A Historic Bronze at the Asia Cup 2025
Competing against five nations, the Indian women’s team—10 players from ITBP, 9 from Leh, 1 from Himachal Pradesh—won three out of five matches. They beat Malaysia, UAE, and Kyrgyzstan, securing the bronze medal.
As the Indian national anthem echoed through the arena for the first time in ice hockey history, the players—overcome with emotion—celebrated a moment that will inspire generations.
Why This Victory Matters
A Symbol of Hope
This isn’t just a medal—it’s a message. With belief and effort, even the most unlikely dreams can be realized.
Empowering Future Generations
People across India, especially in mountain communities, now have new role models. The rink is no longer just a place for specific gender.
The victory has sparked nationwide demand for:
- Better training infrastructure
- Government and corporate sponsorships
- Equitable Media coverage and recognition for sports in India for All Genders.
“We started with nothing but a pair of skates and a dream. Now we have a medal, a country’s pride, and the hope that more girls will join us on the ice.”
This isn’t just a win—it’s the birth of a movement. The Indian women’s ice hockey team has inspired a nation to believe in possibilities beyond tradition.
