Susrita Samantaray: Fusing Art, Science, and Odisha’s Rich Heritage Through Microart
Susrita Samantaray is an M.Tech Biotechnologist turned microartist from Odisha, whose unique passion for microart shines through her intricate pen drawings. Combining her scientific background with her love for art, Susrita creates stunning pieces that celebrate Odisha’s culture, heritage, temples, language, food, and more. Her art focuses on promoting the state’s rich legacy with innovative themes and detailed designs, making her work a powerful visual tool for cultural promotion.
Her journey into microart began during her second year of Biotechnology studies. While spending long hours in the lab, Susrita began to doodle and sketch with a ballpoint pen in her diary, turning these idle moments into a therapeutic artistic outlet. This creative exploration led to a harmonious blend of art and science, resulting in detailed scientific illustrations. One such illustration on “Login Sustainable Bio-Economy for Survival” was selected and displayed at the prestigious Global Bioeconomy Summit (GBS) in Berlin in 2018. She also won the Best Poster Presentation Award at the International Biological Engineering Meeting held at JNU, New Delhi.
Through her artistic journey, Susrita has contributed to several research papers, books, and design projects, including her role as a science communicator and designer for over three years. Her preference for microart lies in its healing nature, where intricate patterns and details allow her to escape from the pressures of everyday life. The compact nature of microart, requiring only pens and a small sketchbook, makes it easy for her to travel and create on the go, though it demands immense patience and time.
In her ongoing mission to promote Odisha’s tourism, Susrita plans to continue creating innovative works that blend the beauty of art with the essence of science and culture. Her microart stands as a testament to her dedication to both her roots and her craft, offering a fresh perspective on Odisha’s artistic and scientific richness
