Odisha-born Susrita Samantaray is not your conventional artist. With an M.Tech in Biotechnology, she has seamlessly transformed her scientific acumen into breathtaking microart that pays tribute to the rich cultural heritage of her home state. Through pen-on-paper precision, Susrita captures the essence of Odisha — its temples, traditions, language, cuisine, and folklore — in astonishing detail, making her a rising name in India’s cultural and artistic landscape.
Susrita’s artistic journey began unexpectedly during her second year of Biotechnology studies. Long hours in the lab sparked a creative curiosity, prompting her to sketch and doodle with a humble ballpoint pen in her diary. What started as a stress-relieving habit soon evolved into a serious artistic pursuit.
This fusion of science and art became her unique signature. Her scientific illustration titled “Login: Sustainable Bio-Economy for Survival” was selected for presentation at the prestigious Global Bioeconomy Summit (GBS) in Berlin in 2018, marking a major early milestone. The same year, she earned the Best Poster Presentation Award at the International Biological Engineering Meeting held at Jawaharlal Nehru University, New Delhi.

What sets Susrita apart is her unwavering commitment to celebrating Odisha’s identity. Her microart is more than visual appeal — it’s a cultural narrative. Whether it’s the intricate architecture of Konark Sun Temple or the flavors of traditional Odia cuisine, each artwork is a tribute to her roots.
With her innovative themes and detailed designs, Susrita is not just preserving history — she’s reimagining it for a global audience. Her works serve as visual ambassadors of Odisha’s legacy, attracting interest from tourists, cultural institutions, and art enthusiasts alike.
For Susrita, microart is also a form of mindfulness. The meticulous detailing required in each piece offers her an emotional outlet and a form of mental wellness. With just pens and a compact sketchbook, she turns any setting into a portable studio — whether on a train, in nature, or between meetings. However, the craft demands intense patience, focus, and dedication, qualities that she brings from her scientific background.
In addition to her creative pursuits, Susrita has actively contributed to scientific research, design, and communication. For over three years, she has worked as a science communicator and designer, bridging complex scientific concepts with visual storytelling. Her dual mastery of biotechnology and visual art positions her as a unique interdisciplinary voice in both fields.Looking ahead, Susrita remains committed to using her art as a tool for Odisha tourism promotion and cultural preservation. She continues to blend science and creativity to produce works that are educational, engaging, and emotionally resonant. With her growing recognition and purpose-driven artistry, she is well on her way to becoming a global ambassador for Odia culture and artistic innovation.
